Finally, the day comes, and you arrive in the City of Light… only to be greeted by heavy rain. You step out of the taxi, right into a puddle, soaking your shoes. The sky is gray, the streets are slick, and suddenly, all the magical stories you’ve heard seem exaggerated.
“This is Paris? What a disappointment.”
In that moment, your entire experience of Paris shifts—not because Paris has changed, but because your focus has shifted. Instead of marveling at the historic architecture, the delicious café culture, or the rich art scene, all you see is bad weather and discomfort. You leave with a new story: “Paris is overrated.”

When we train our minds to look for the good, we naturally start seeing more of it. This isn’t about ignoring problems or pretending life is perfect. It’s about choosing an empowering perspective that allows us to navigate challenges with optimism and resilience.
The Influence of Others: What Story Are You Hearing?
Often, people warn us about challenges with good intentions. They share their bad experiences, thinking they’re preparing us for what’s ahead.
• “Be careful about starting your own business—it’s really tough.”
• “This company is great, but watch out for this one thing!”
• “That city is beautiful, but oh, the traffic is awful.”
These warnings, while sometimes useful, activate a focus on the negative. If we internalize them too much, we end up seeing only the potholes and problems rather than the possibilities and opportunities.
The truth is, every place, every opportunity, every person has flaws. If we choose to focus on them, we’ll always find reasons to be frustrated, to complain, or to hesitate.
But imagine if, instead, we made it a habit to seek the good first?
• “Yes, starting a business is challenging, but imagine the freedom and fulfillment it can bring!”
• “This company has some challenges, but there’s also an incredible chance to grow.”
• “Traffic is bad, but the city has amazing energy and culture!”
The more we focus on the good, the more we train our minds to seek solutions rather than problems.
The Skill of Positive Focus: Training Your Mind Like a Muscle

1. Find the Good in Everything

When people share warnings or negative experiences, acknowledge them, but decide for yourself what you will focus on. Take in information, but filter it through an optimistic lens.
4. Train Yourself to Be a Solution-Seeker
When faced with difficulties, ask: “What’s the best way forward?” rather than focusing on the problem itself. This small shift can change your entire experience of life.
5. Surround Yourself with Positivity
The people around you influence your focus. Spend time with those who uplift, inspire, and help you see possibilities rather than limitations.
Be the Person Who Sees the Beauty
